While in Detroit over the weekend, we had some spare time before the show so I was able to wander around Detroit and take some pictures. We were close to Comerica Park and if I had to choose an MLB team, it would be the Tigers. I have gone to a few games and knew that there were several photogenic areas of the stadium. I initially tried to get a picture through the fence of the baseball diamond and outfield. However I was unable to get the picture I wanted so i moved on to the main gate, which I knew would work very well.

While wandering around Detroit during some free time I walked into Grand Circus Park and found a couple cool statues to photograph. This is the Millennium Bell, which has been described as a "young and rising Detroit tradition". The bell was made in the 1990's and is rung only once a year on New Years Eve. It was very hard to get a good composition of the bell without stepping into the road. Luckily, one of the lanes was closed so I was able to take a few extra, vital, steps back. The background I chose is also architecturally significant so I thought it would be cool to see those buildings in the blueprint as well.

The "Whales Away!" mural on the David Broderick tower is one of the most recognizable murals in Detroit. Visible from nearly anywhere to the northeast of the tower, it almost acts as a north star to get back to the entertainment area of Detroit. I really wanted to get a good picture of the mural as it is iconic to the city of Detroit, but it is very hard to get a clean picture without being on a rooftop. I chose this angle because the buildings in front of the mural create a sort of frame around the tower which highlights the mural. I would have preferred to see a bit more the mural and if the light was coming from a more easterly direction to brighten the mural, but I like how this angle and lighting came out.

Another statue in Grand Circus Park is the Russell Alexander Alger Memorial Fountain. On the bottom of the statue is a plaque with Russell Alexander's face surrounded in laurels. But the bottom of the fountain was dry and full of leaves and pennies so I opted not to get the full statue in the frame. At first I was really confused about why there was a woman depicted on a memorial of a man, with no resemblance whatsoever. However, after some research about the statue I was able to understand the statue better. The upper part of the statue was made to represent the state of Michigan, as Russell Alexander served as governor during his lifetime.

The Detroit Opera House prides itself on keeping Detroit alive during Great Depression. It offered the people of Detroit entertainment with an assortment of operas, plays and films. We were in Detroit over the weekend to see a production of Carmen that my mom really wanted us to see. The staff at the opera house wouldn't allow cameras to be taken into the theater, which was a shame since the inside of the building is much more impressive artistically and architecturally than the outside. This angle came out fairly well, despite my apparent inability to keep the camera straight.
